The protection of the fire rings was one of the key issues in the recent November 2014 Newport Beach City Council elections. The 4 newly elected city council members are “friends” of the fire rings (aka “Team Newport”) – Diane Dixon, Kevin Muldoon, Duffy Duffield, and Scott Peotter. They defeated former Mayor Rush Hill who worked hard against us over the last couple years, and his allies.
Our organization is more optimistic than ever that our chances of saving the fire rings are better than ever! But, we have much work to do in the coming weeks and months.
We are working hard with the new council, city staff, and the California Coastal Commission to find workable solutions – that are also in accordance with the AQMD and California Coastal Commission and the California Coastal Act. Solutions that will protect the fire rings and our beaches, while allowing their use by everyone in a safe and healthy way.
A special THANKS to newly elected Councilman Scott Peotter who has placed the fire rings on the first full agenda of the new city council, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2015.
Please “Save-this-date” and come to the council meeting to show your support of the fire rings.
Again- we are working hard over the coming weeks and months to save the fire rings. Your time as a volunteer or financial support are welcomed! Also – send us your comments to be posted on our website – we want to hear from you!
We will continue to keep you updated on any developments too.
A Very Happy Holidays to you and yours!!!
– Friends of the Fire Rings
